All of the schools described by Wagner in chapter 6 sound wonderful, and I would be excited to work at any of the three. If I had to choose one, I would love to work at the Francis Parker Charter Essential School. Despite their bias towards humanities, I like the idea of essentially submitting portfolios and presentations to move on to the next division. As someone who is getting both a math and a science credential, I also like the idea of working on crosscutting curriculum. I could build units around central themes like Wagner mentions, and it would give students a more coherent understanding of both math and science. The way we teach standards as though each concept is separate and distinct from the next makes math and science feel choppy and disconnected when it really is all part of the same whole model of understanding. The habits of learning that the school basis its curriculum around, inquiry, expression, critical thinking, collaboration, organization, attentiveness, involvement, also seem like they would all benefit learning. Through common core, ideas like inquiry, collaboration, attentiveness, critical thinking, and reflection are all pieces of the lessons we’re trying to create. Working at a school where these are already important tenets of learning would be a welcome change.
